Gracile Phenotype Assessment Tool

Observational framework for tracking craniofacial component expression

Purpose: This tool tracks the expression intensity of specific craniofacial components observed with high frequency in Khoesan (Southern Africa), Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia), and Great Lakes (Rwanda, Burundi) populations. Rate each component on a scale of 0-5 based on observable characteristics.

Phenotype Expression Score

Score Interpretation Guide

20.0 - 25.0 Strong expression - All or most components present at high intensity
15.0 - 19.9 Clear expression - Multiple key components present at moderate-to-high intensity
10.0 - 14.9 Moderate expression - Several components present at moderate intensity
5.0 - 9.9 Weak expression - Few components present or low intensity across components
0.0 - 4.9 Minimal expression - Components largely absent or at minimal intensity

Regional Population Context

  • Khoesan (Southern Africa): San, Khoekhoe populations - historical presence across Southern Africa
  • Horn of Africa: Ethiopian, Eritrean, Somali populations - diverse ethnic groups with varying expressions
  • Great Lakes Region: Rwanda, Burundi, parts of Uganda/Kenya - Tutsi and related groups
  • Diaspora populations: Features appear in descendant populations globally through ancestry
  • Admixed populations: South African Coloured, various mixed-heritage groups show partial expression
